无国界记者组织在 2002 年创建了*世界新闻自由指数*，并且每年根据七个标准类别和指标的列表汇编数据。该调查在 2017 年的报道将美国排名在第 43 位，而 2018 年则排到了 45 位，显示为再次下降两位。
幸运的是，美国读者和全球英文读者不再需要那极少数的几个主流媒体来获取信息了，有越来越多的独立新闻来源可供任何访问互联网的人查阅。“无党派、独立和非营利的”媒体渠道，它们才是捍卫新闻道德准则的真正的媒体。
